On Wednesday, October 13, I spent my first hour working at the community garden. I remember that I was wondering if I was going to have a chance to start working there, but it felt very relieving to find a time to work there. At first, I felt like I was the only one there and I was unsure if I was allowed to be there, but when the garden club leaders came, it felt very welcoming. I liked the smell of the leaves and the weeds. I spent the whole hour picking up fallen branches and running the wheelbarrow all the way down to the fence to dump out the old leaves and branches. The smell of the leaves reminded me of autumn and made me think of how much I appreciate nature. I always feel comfort when I smell autumn leaves because it reminds me of being warm and getting ready for winter. It also reminds me of my childhood when I would spend my Octobers going apple picking and drinking apple cider outside of the city. Also during the time I worked there, we cut down some small trees and bushes that grew right outside of the fenced-off portion of the garden. I remember thinking to myself that it is natural for plants to grow long and that cutting them is unnatural. On the other hand, I also realized that cutting down old plants provides space for new plants to grow. I realized that the purpose of maintaining a garden is growing different plants for consumption, and that it is important to eliminate old plants so that people can grow new plants in order to keep the garden functioning. In conclusion, my first time working at the garden reminded me of how pretty autumn is, and that gardens are meant to grow different plants, and that cutting down old plants provides space for new plants to grow.
